A taste of a typical day in my life...
6:45 wake up, most likely there are a lot of dogs barking around the neighborhood, or one kept me up all night.
7:00 try to analyze the weather... will it rain while i´m at school, on my way home from school, or when i´m home?
7:10 once clothes have been decided based on when it will rain, i have some breakfast... usually bread and cafe con leche (instant). except for those of you that know me, this instant stuff does not cut it. i no longer have caffeine headaches, but have such incredible difficulty staying awake. it´s getting better though. all i want constantly is a good cup of coffee. is that so much to ask?
7:25 leave house
7:30 meet with caroline, one of my friends from school who lives down the block from me. we meet at the corner and take the bus together
7:40 on bus, crammed between a whole random assortment of people being thrown around as the bus drives crazily on the streets. nobody knows how to drive here. bad news bears.
7:55 arrive at our class, called el experimento
8:00 spanish class... i love my teacher but i´m starting to feel that reviewing the pluperfect subjunctive for the umpteenth time will not make a difference...
10:00 coffee and snack break. this coffee is quite possibly worse than instant cafe. did not know that could happen. but they have amazing snacks for us... most of the time it´s bread. they love pan here!
10:30 ecology/environmental class taught by various lecturers. we´ve had lectures on deforestation, land reform policy in ecuador, botany, army ants, soladeros (salt licks), the history of ecuador, etc etc etc.
1:00 class ends
1:10 caroline and i go home
1:40 home
2:00 heat up soup, rice, and some kind of lentil/bean/veggie/potato dish for lunch. they are very good cooks.
2:30 hmm... what to do with the rest of the afternoon? i am very rarely inclined to do any sort of homework so i´ll try to find something to spice it up. for example, last week i went with friends to climb up the basilica (a huge cathedral in the centro historico), walk around, look at a huge protest going on outside the government building (something about labor unions... someone´s always protesting something), ran into our spanish teachers having coffee (a capuccino made by someone who´s never had a capuccino before), etc.
6:00 pasiones prohibidas is on the tv. a brasilian soap opera... so good. it´s about prohibited passions... who would have thought?
7:00 antm is on. it´s very interesting to watch it with spanish dubbed over it.
7:30 have some cafe con leche and ... take a guess. some pan! i told you they love it. most of the time, it´s just me, cristina and rigo becuase anita is mostly at her boyfriend´s house. he´s adorable and super nice.
8:00 watch the news... it seems like everything here goes from bad to worse. flooding on the coast, trouble with the farc, corruption, correa hamming it up for some thing or another (after bashing the world bank, he´s trying to get a loan from them. oh dear)
8:45 dos caras, another brasilian soap, is on. i think it´s better than pasiones prohibidas. that´s just my opinion.
9:30 get ready for bed. if i feel inclined, i may take a shower. i love being with this group becuase we frequently forget to shower. makes life so much easier.
10:00 i´m out.
sometimes we spice it up by going cool places for field trips, like museums in quito, or to the paramo and some hot springs to look at plants. cool stuff. we also might try to find a place where there´s something other than pilsener (the local beer) served. pilsener does in a pinch, but all ecuadorians rave about it. it´s like an american raving about how good budweiser is. seriously. there´s much better cerveza out there. the mom of my host dad (rigo) is turning 90 today so we´re having an almuerzo for her. i´m excited to meet the rest of the fam! chao!
